Three people were killed and three others wounded on Thursday during a new shooting in the United States, in an industrial area of the state of Maryland.
According to reports, the shooting was committed by a young woman who committed suicide and whose motives remained unknown.
“We have three wounded, three dead, two of whom died on the spot and one died in the hospital, and the gunfighter died in the hospital as well, she is a single woman aged 26,” Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said at a press conference.
The shootings, which regularly plague America, are very rarely perpetrated by women. Less than 5% of fencers are women, according to an FBI study that looked at 160 such events between 2000 and 2013
The most recent was on April 4, when a Vegan activist injured three people by opening fire at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno, California, to take revenge for the closure of several of her video channels by the platform. She also committed suicide.
The author of the shots was identified by police as Snochia Moseley of the the Baltimore area. She showed up Thursday morning at the warehouse where she was working as a temporary worker for the Rite Aid drugstore in Aberdeen, a small town about 100 kilometers north of Washington.
For some unknown reason, she opened fire with a handgun first outside and then inside the building, said Sheriff Gahler. She then tried to commit suicide by shooting herself in the head. Seriously injured, she was taken to a hospital in the area where she died.
The alert was given shortly after 9 am after the first shots were fired and the police quickly intervened, supported by employees of the federal agency responsible for regulating weapons and explosives. A nearby primary school was placed in confinement and the police asked the motorists to avoid the area.
According to Sheriff Gahler, the young woman used a Glock pistol, which she had bought legally, and several chargers. “For the moment, there is no motive,” he said, recalling that shootings “can happen anywhere, anytime.”
The police raided the young woman’s home, he said.
Colleen Hendrickson, who lives in the neighborhood, was waiting for the bus when someone warned her that there had been a shootout nearby.
“It’s really very quiet and it’s the most chaotic situation I’ve ever seen,” she told a local CNN affiliate. “It’s very scary when it’s right here at your doorstep.”
Every year in the United States, more than 30,000 people die from firearms, including more than 10,000 per homicide, according to Everytown for Gun Safety.
The country is deeply divided in the face of the regulation on the carrying of arms, a right guaranteed by the second amendment to the Constitution dating from 1791.
After the shooting in a high school in Parkland, Florida in February 2018, the students of this school had launched a vast movement demanding reforms, efforts for the moment remain vain at the legislative level.
October 1, 2018 will mark the first anniversary of the most deadly shooting in the country’s recent history in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fifty-eight people had been shot.
