Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has raised concerns for the migrant families living in the parking lot at a Border Patrol in El Paso, Texas.
Ocasio-Cortez shared a picture captured by the Washington Post reporter Nick Miroff on Twitter, along with a caption: “Look at this picture. When you’re looking at this photo, you’re looking at a mirror. This is America. This is Texas. This is our…course of action, the one we chose. I cannot and will not accept it,” along with the hashtags to end family separation, abolish ICE and reunite families.
The image shared by Miroff has gained attention from a lot of people, expressing their concern. He also mentioned that the situation has become worse than the “child migrant crisis of 2014” under the administration of the President Obama.
The crisis raised by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, seemed to have started due to funding at the wrong place. It can also be said that the intervention of the US in the Central America during the 20th century is the root cause of the issue.
As per the report by the Migration Policy Institute, what President Trump mentioned as border crisis is actually a crisis of asylum system. It got worse for the immigrants during the Trump administration, due to their policies.
On Wednesday, the commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency Kevin McAleenan agreed that the agency has suffered a “breaking point”. The warnings of McAleenan about the immigration system and that the present resources would not be sufficient in the coming days have come true.
According to McAleenan, an unexpected humanitarian border security crisis is being experienced all along the southwest border of the country with El Paso to be affected the most.
The CBP has also mentioned that the Office of Field Operations would be allocating 750 CBP officers to the Border Patrol Sectors for now. The agency has also agreed that the processing facilities and the personnel to manage the immigrants are currently short-handed; therefore the additional officers will help with care and custody responsibilities.
The Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has asked the citizens to re-evaluate the method chosen to respond to the immigrants who are in search of a place to live. From the beginning of her electoral campaign, she has been demanding an end to family separation, re-unification of separated families and the abolishment of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
The immigration advocates are asking to dispose more resources to the asylum process rather than the border wall. The border wall, a barrier to be built on the border of US-Mexico, is estimated to be completed with $22 billion, as per the Department of Homeland Security. The amount is said to be an underestimate as per the reports of various other organizations. However, Trump argues that $5.7billion would be enough to build the wall.
The asylum crisis could have been very well averted, if half of the amount spent on border wall till now, had been allocated for providing resources to the border patrol, shelter and other basic amenities to immigrants. Even now, if the Trump administration amends its policies and works towards the improvement of immigration issues, they can still turn the boat in to a different direction.
