Following Ilhan Omar’s speech in regards with the 9/11 attack, President Trump has found a new target. After speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spoke in the defense of the Democratic Party and Omar, Trump criticized her.
Omar gave the disputable speech at the Council on American-Islamic Relations in March, saying that the Muslims were being treated as second-class citizens because “some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties.” The speech backfired and was criticized by Trump along with various other politicians and people.
Recently, Trump posted a video on Twitter, which comprised of 9/11 attack and Omar’s speech. The post led to an increase in death threats to Omar. In response of the tweet, many of the presidential candidates came out in the support of Ilhan Omar and criticized Trump.
Pelosi, seeing the rise in death threats to Omar asked the authorities to increase her and her family’s protection.
Pelosi said, “We have no taint of that in the Democratic Party, and just because they want to accuse somebody of that doesn’t mean … that we take that bait.” She criticized Trump and said that his post of 9/11 video is “beneath the dignity of the Oval Office.”
Since Monday, Trump has been continuously taking a dig at Ilhan Omar, claiming her to be “very disrespectful” towards both America and Israel and has “got a way about her that’s very, very bad for our country”.
He also pulled Pelosi in the ugly blame game and tweeted, “Before Nancy, who has lost all control of Congress and is getting nothing done, decides to defend her leader, Rep. Omar, she should look at the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements Omar has made. She is out of control, except for her control of Nancy!”
The issue involving Ilhan Omar, and her speech related with 9/11 has prevailed for a longer time than it should have. As the 2020 elections approach, usage of 9/11 for political gain will continue. Hence, every candidate of either of the parties should be more cautious about what they say, as anything they say will not only directly impact the elections, but also the mind-set and feelings of the Americans.
