Out of the five nominations, H.E.R won two awards each for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Album.

The speech from the exonerated five members, including Korey Wise, Raymond Santana Jr., Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, and Kevin Richardson, who had suffered worst consequences in the past for being wrongly convicted in a 1989 rape case in New York, received cheering and much respect from the audience. Their growing up as an individual despite their continuous mistreatment and struggles was commendable.

Not only did the BET Awards function introduced the performances by individuals and groups, but also the members paid tribute to the dead ones for their works by playing musical tribute for them and awarding their families. Some of the singers also paid tribute to the go-go music of the mid-60s and late-70s as it remained popular throughout the Washington DC during that time.
