Nancy Pelosi pushes for Imprisonment, as Democrats divide on Trump’s Impeachment

Nancy Pelosi

In response to the increased calls demanding President Trump’s impeachment, recently House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed her wish of seeing the President “in prison” during a meeting with the Democrat lawmakers.

Throughout the debate, Pelosi’s views contradicted with the House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, who had earlier forced the former to launch an inquiry into Trump’s impeachment. To avoid the same situation in the present, Pelosi cleared herself on Trump’s impeachment saying, “I don’t want to see him impeached; I want to see him in prison.”

The calls for impeachment significantly increased with findings in Robert Mueller’s investigation, which convicted the US president of collusion with Russia during the 2016 presidential elections and for committing obstruction of justice. Though Trump has largely denied the allegations based on the investigation, it is widely known that a sitting president cannot be charged with a federal crime according to the Department of Justice’s longstanding policy.

“The special counsel’s office is part of the Department of Justice,” Mueller said, “and by regulation it was bound by that department policy. Charging the president with a crime was, therefore, not an option we could consider.”

Muller’s statement raises questions of whether a president committing a crime, could be prosecuted? If not, then who would deliver justice for its acts?

By criticizing the President over the Mueller report, Nancy Pelosi aims for the win of the Democrats in the 2020 presidential elections. It has not been the first time when a Democrat has attempted to investigate or criticize Trump over 2016 collusion with Russia. Some of them believe that the idea of Trump’s impeachment lacks public support, thereby scheduling their proceedings for some time later in future.

Recently, a poll revealed that about 41 percent of the residents supported Trump’s impeachment by the US senate, but the fact that this act would only remove him from his post, relieving him of all charges in his private sector brought them disappointment. Therefore, defeating Trump in the elections, and making him face criminal prosecutions for his wrongdoings is what Nancy Pelosi has been debating.

The impeachment calls have led to the division of views amongst the Democrats. Despite the continuous accusations and differing views amongst the party members, there is a need that all the parties should unite themselves, as a part of winning strategy to avoid losing to the opposition in the wake of the upcoming elections in the country.

Observing the existing circumstances while predicting the future outcomes of their actions, Nancy Pelosi has been making every possible effort to unite the Democrats and prosecute Trump at the same time.
